The Missing Ingredient – Photography Poses
When you are familiar with the printing process there will come a time when you will want to have more control over the result. This is where burning-in and dodging comes to assist you. This method can be used with both the wet printing process as well as dry i.e. your photo editing program. However, this article focuses on the wet process.
Parts of your print can be made darker by burning-in or kept from darkening by dodging. This method is as old as photography itself and every photographer should be using it regardless of the printing system used.
For example: 1. You can ask if you could take something off of the larger priced package to drop the price down a little. 2. Ask if you can get the package for a slightly lower price that way you don\’t have to sacrifice. 3. See if you can get a discount for making one lump sum payment instead of making a deposit and then incremental payments. 4. Don\’t be afraid to ask for a deal. The worst thing the photographer can say is no.
Dodging Dodging the print describes holding back light from selections in the image for a portion of the overall print exposure. Your own hand is an extremely flexible tool, capable of assuming very intricate shapes. A dodging tool may also be cut from cardboard and can vary in shape and size; be as small as a 5c coin or as large as the print itself. Dodging tools are often made of circular or oval pieces of material taped or glued to handles of stiff wire. The handles should be long enough to easily reach the middle of the image; otherwise the shadow of your hand will appear at the edge of your print.
The style you choose for your wedding pictures should not be a weighing factor in the price of them. For example, if you prefer to have an artistic style photography for your wedding, do not allow the photographer to talk you into traditional style photography in order for you to be able to have your budget wedding photography done.
Of course one could say that I am protecting myself against problems with the construction and you would be right on some level. But that is not truly why I am doing it. I really want to be able to assemble a full documentation of this process that I can look at down the road when we are fully enjoying our great new kitchen.
